General Britain has been allowed to retain the right to impose stricter conditions on th
Posted by dillondog on Sunday, April 20, 2008 @ 08:50 AM GMT (32 reads)

The European Parliament voted on April 10 to allow the UK to continue to require a serological test and a six-month waiting period after vaccination against rabies before an animal can enter the country for the first time under the Pet Travel Scheme. Also, the requirement for treatment for ticks and tapeworms (echinococcus) has been allowed to remain for an extended period.

When first introduced in 2003 the regulation allowed a five-year transitional period for he UK, as well as Ireland, Finland, Malta and Sweden, to continue to apply stricter rules in regard to rabies, echinococcosis and tick controls.

Hot News Going to the Dogs - New Controversial Book
Posted by dillondog on Saturday, March 8, 2008 @ 06:25 PM GMT (97 reads)

A new book by outspoken vet Peter Culpin, in which he reveals secrets vets would rather you didn't know about what goes on behind the scenes in some veterinary practices around the UK.

As the World's biggest dog show, CRUFTS, takes centre stage again for another year, a senior vet, who has spent the last four years working undercover in practices around the UK, has now lifted the lid on how his colleagues run their practices. In his new e-book, available to download from 21st March from petsnaturally.com, vet Peter Culpin doesn't pull any punches. After running his own successful practice for over 25 years, his eyes were opened when he began working as a locum in other vets' practices.

Four years down the line, and with a huge dossier of information on the shortcuts, bad practices and lawbreaking tactics employed by some of the country's 4000 plus vets, he has written a 300 page book entitled "Going To The Dogs".

Cats Home Remedies for Cat Acne

estellaparker writes "The people (and there are many) who have wrestled with acne will know that it can be very difficult to eradicate. Like humans cats are often afflicted with a similar condition that to acne. It is called "feline acne" or, more commonly, "chin acne" or "kitty acne". "

Hot News Vets warn of health threat for obese pets
Posted by dillondog on Thursday, January 17, 2008 @ 10:04 AM GMT (155 reads)

Man’s best friend may soon need to go on a diet as pet obesity in the UK rises to epidemic proportions. According to a new survey the problem is made worse by the fact that most dog owners are in denial about how fat their pets are. Nine out of ten owners believe their canine counterparts are the correct weight range for their age and breed despite research which shows over half of the nations dogs to be overweight.

Hot News RSPCA Shock Admission
Posted by dillondog on Friday, January 11, 2008 @ 02:02 PM GMT (308 reads)

Article and Press release from PAACT the Professional Association of Applied Canine Trainers

I believe that the actions of the RSPCA in Spaying and Neutering dogs as young as 6 weeks old may contravene the "duty of care" part of the Animal Welfare Act.

All the welfare organisations and responsible bodies I contacted, including Battersea Dogs Home, The Kennel Club and The Dogs Trust. Are rightly horrified at this practice.

I urge you to read this article explaining what the RSPCA are doing, and their response to my concerns and questions.

Please circulate or publish it either on the web or in magazines or national newspapers.

By Nick Jones MCFBA
Alpha Dog Behaviour

Next month will bring fireworks, and for many dogs and owners this period is a nightmare…I know I see it frequently in my work as a dog behaviourist and trainer. Maybe if it were one night you could accept it, but no, it seems to go on for weeks; creating misery for the dogs and owners alike.

General We want your help to raise £10,000
Posted by dillondog on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 @ 06:24 PM GMT (301 reads)

A Page of Pawses for Two Good Causes

Unique and innovative lost and found pet website PawTrax is trying to raise £10,000 to be shared equally between The Animal Health Trust (AHT) and University of Cambridge Veterinary School Trust (CamVet)

The idea is that visitors to the website buy squares on a grid and upload a picture of a paw at a cost of just £1 per square. The grid contains 10,000 squares each 10 x 10 pixels in size.

Everyone who uploads a paw can also add text, an additional image and a link to a website of their choice. These details then display in a popup when the paw is hovered over with the mouse.

“Whilst we only allow paws on the grid, the additional image and text could relate to a lost cat, a beloved dog or a company logo” said PawTrax Founder and Webmaster Peter Callaway.

Why not pay PawTrax a visit, Pick-a-Paw and place it on the grid?

Dogs Spaying and Neutering

Spaying and neutering can make for a better and more affectionate family pet. It is a medical fact that spaying and neutering can prolong the life of our pets and may reduce the number of health problems in later life

Dogs Bone or Toy Guarding

I find this problem mainly in the gundog breeds dogs such as Labradors , Springers, and Golden Retrievers but have also come across it in Shar Pei 's Staffs and English Bull Terriers, and most of the guarding breeds.

Dogs Food Guarding
Posted by dillondog on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 @ 06:06 PM GMT (322 reads)

We work very hard training our dogs to fit into our lifestyle and our family unit, we think we have done great, then just as we are congratulating ourselves on a job well done the growl starts, it may be as we pass the bed, food bowl, or pigs ear, or even as we remove a toy or tissue.

This is a common problem, often called food guarding, or resource guarding. In reality it is a natural innate tendency for dogs to protect what they perceive as theirs. Possession to a dog is 9/10ths of the law, some dogs will resource guard anything, and that includes us.

This happened to me recently.

Dogs Canine Communication and Body Language Part 2
Posted by dillondog on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 @ 06:02 PM GMT (358 reads)

Critical Periods

If we separated a human baby from all contact with other humans until it was five years old then that child would never learn the ability to speak or to empathise and converse comfortably. In most cases, it would be fearful and introverted. 0 to 5 years old is a critical learning period for humans. The old saying “give me the child and I will show you the man” holds more truth than we could ever imagine. We learn more during this period that at any other time in our lives. In relative terms 0 to 16 weeks is the equivalent in canine age.

Dogs Canine Communication and Body Language
Posted by dillondog on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 @ 05:58 PM GMT (541 reads)

To really understand our dogs you need to be able to listen and more importantly see what they are trying to tell us.

A couple of years ago a Japanese electronics company came up with a Gizmo which they claimed could convert dogs barks, yips and whines into human language, thereby allowing us to understand “Doggie” speak for the first time. I was on a radio program recently, discussing the merits and usefulness of a new dog collar that was also a mobile phone. You could ring up and converse with your dog at any time and enjoy a nice cosy chat. You might as well text your pet for all the good phoning it would do; the mostly likely outcome of this idea would be to startle and frighten your pet.

Dogs Re. Dogs toxicity
Posted by dillondog on Friday, June 29, 2007 @ 06:21 PM GMT (342 reads)

Col_West_Lancs writes "Following the excellent and informative submission about raisin toxicity submitted by dillondog, charting the unfortunate and terminal poisoning of a lab. I thought it may be wise to give information on this and a few other 'unusual' and lesser know poisons that can affect our loved dogs. I know that, as a pet owner, I was surprised to see some of the items that may have an adverse effect.

I cannot supply the level of technical or veterinarian information that dillondog includes in his article, but if this information avoids just one such disastrous incident, I will be pleased that I took the trouble to post it on this excellent site.

Details have been posted on our local breed club site and a more detailed feature and explanation of the foods / plants likely to have a severe effect on our dogs may be found here: http://www.westlancsboxers.co.uk/Poison-caution.htm

I hope this helps, as a pet owner I know I was unaware of many of these facts. I can only image how devastating it would be to lose a healthy dog under such disastrous and avoidable circumstances.
