Cats ‘QWERTY CATS’ – NEW FELINE CRAZE SWEEPS THE NATION
Posted bydillondog on Monday, September 7, 2009 @ 06:03 PM GMT

Kittens across the UK have developed a subtle new way of causing mischief in the home, by pouncing on keyboards to grab their owners’ attention.

The increase in ‘Qwerty Cat’ behaviour – a phrase coined by animal behaviourist, Peter Neville, after the keys on the top line of a keyboard – has been identified during a nationwide search to find the UK’s most mischievous kitten.

Organisers, FELIX, found hundreds of entries littered with typos due to kittens regularly jumping on the home PC keyboard, causing their owner to have to stop or retype their work – if indeed they were aware of the feline typing at all.

According to owners, kitten’s favourite ploy when feeling particularly mischievous is to keyboard tap dance, creating literary gems likes ‘fessssswa’ and ‘jikkkkikluh’ whilst pouncing on the mouse attached to the computer.

Leading animal behaviourist, Peter Neville, explains: “Kittens tend to jump on keyboards to grab our attention. When they realise that you’re staring at the screen they try and engage you, at eye level, by jumping on the keyboard while you’re trying to write or send emails.”

FELIX Kitten Factor asked owners to write in detailing their own kitten’s mischievous antics to become the face of the FELIX kitten and win a year’s supply of FELIX food. For every entry received to the competition, FELIX donated £1 to the leading feline charity Cats Protection, and thanks to the great response together they have raised a fantastic £6,661 to help build the charities’ first homing centre in Ferndown, Dorset.

The national competition was won by six-month-old Bobbleicious from St Albans, Hertfordshire. Bobbleicious will feature on FELIX Kitten Multipacks throughout the UK and will also win a year’s supply of FELIX food.

To view this new rising star and her fellow mischievous kitten contenders visit the kitten gallery: www.catslikefelix.co.uk/mischief . Bobbleicious’s owner, Rebecca Tyler, is primed for requests for her ‘paw-tograph’.
