Small Furries National Rabbit Week 2007
Posted by dillondog on Thursday, January 4, 2007 @ 06:54 PM GMT (1312 reads)

National Rabbit Week

http://www.nationalrabbitweek.co.uk which begins on Monday 22 January, will highlight the rise in obesity and dental problems suffered by the third most popular British pet.
It is estimated that there are between 1.6 and 2 million pet rabbits in the UK. Sadly, it is also estimated that at least 80 percent of rabbits are not being fed correctly, which is one of the main contributing factors to their becoming ill.

The campaign will focus on the importance of correctly managing a rabbit's diet, the dental problems owners should be aware of and steps that should be taken to prevent many of these problems occurring.

Vet surgeries around the country will be carrying out free 'healthy hopper' MOTs throughout the initiative to help identify any medical conditions early. Participating practices will also be holding 'healthy hopper' evenings during National Rabbit Week to educate owners on rabbit care and the importance of nutrition.

Celebrity vet, Matt Brash comments:

"Poor nutrition is a continuing threat to the health and wellbeing of pet rabbits. And with one top rabbit vet reporting that 90% of pet rabbits on mixed rations suffer from problems that are dietary related, it is essential that rabbit owners are aware of the implications of an inadequate diet. National Rabbit Week aims to educate rabbit owners on the importance of good nutrition to the overall wellbeing of their pets."
